my ideal solo afternoons are the ones spent with a cup of coffee in hand, wandering around previously unexplored neighborhoods, ducking in and out of the shops. of late, i’ve been spending more time on west third street, which is one of those classic LA streets you should stop by if do find yourself in the city. it’s got a smattering of cafes and boutiques and it’s in between the beverly center and the grove so it’s something you can make an afternoon out of. the only catch is that traffic in the surrounding area requires a lot of patience especially on the weekends, which explains why i haven’t been here all too often.
this past sunday i was on my way to magnolia bakery when i walked into new stone age. i’d read about it sometime ago on cupcakes and cashmere but never took note of where that was, so i was pleasantly surprised. it’s got quite the eclectic mix of rustic housewares, decorative pieces, handcrafted jewelry, cozy colorful throws, shadowboxes with bugs and butterflies, and random knick knacks you never thought you would want (until you saw them there).
i spent a great deal of time alone in this store just because it was filled with so many conversation pieces imbued with a wonderfully vintage aesthetic sans the kitsch. i really appreciate a lovingly curated store that draws your attention to the unexpected and smallest of details, and every piece in new stone age seems like it was carefully chosen, like it has a story behind it waiting to be unearthed, and like it’s truly one of a kind. and most of all, because stores are meant to be explored, i love one that embodies at its heart the very notion of discovery – even more so if it was a serendipitous one.

Do not ever move back to SG – but if you do, could you bring New Stone Age with you? It’s wonderful!! I love those big gold scissors and the red trimmed bowls!
hehe believe me, i’d love to cart the whole store back…we could do with more amazing stores like this back home. can’t believe it’s been around for almost 3 decades too!
Are you for reals!?! Three decades!? If only things in SG had that kind of lasting power.
